DYFI leader Minakshi Mukherjee has lodged a formal complaint with Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, accusing a police officer of allegedly "manhandling" her during a protest at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month. A senior police officer confirmed on Friday that an inquiry is currently underway into the allegations.
The incident occurred on August 9, when Mukherjee, who also serves as the state secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), along with fellow DYFI leader Kalatan Dasgupta and several supporters, reached R G Kar Hospital following the shocking news of the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor.
The group reportedly intercepted a vehicle that was transporting the doctor’s body for cremation, demanding that the body be preserved for further investigation and a thorough postmortem.
During the protest, Mukherjee claims that police personnel engaged in a scuffle with her as they attempted to clear the path for the vehicle. She alleges that some male police officers physically assaulted her in the process. Mukherjee has requested that Commissioner Goyal take appropriate action against the officers involved.
Additional Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Murlidhar Sharma, stated that the authorities are taking the complaint seriously and are conducting a detailed inquiry into the incident.
